Sworn or Public Translation

The terms are interchangeable: Sworn or Public Translation.

The Sworn Translation was instituted in Brazil by Decree 13.609 of October 21, 1943, which bestows public faith to the sworn professional.

The job of a Sworn Translator can only be done by professional who has been certified through a civil-service examination and is registered with the Board of Trade of the State where he/she resides. Certified translators must faithfully follow all deliberations and obligations regarding sworn translations and observe the fees described in the official price tables.

According to article 18: No book, document or paper of any nature that is written in a foreign language shall have effect in the offices of the Federal, State or City governments, in any court or entity maintained, supervised or directed by public authorities, without being accompanied by their respective translation made in accordance with this regulation.

Therefore, a sworn translation is always necessary when judicial documents and procedures require legal value or must be presented in court. Sworn translations are valid in all of Brazil and are recognized in most foreign countries.

We provide sworn translations of all types of documents. Usually, the documents requiring a sworn translation are lawsuits, certificates, powers of attorney, representation before tax and commercial authorities, articles of association, documents for tax purposes or for public bidding outside of Brazil.

Cerdán Traduções has over 19 years of experience with this type of translation and relies on the expertise of Eloisa Cerdán and her team of certified Sworn Translators to provide high quality services.

Technical Translation

A technical translation is so called because technical translators, in addition to being proficient in the source and target languages, must know in depth the specific terminology of the area in question.

This type of translation includes technical manuals, scientific articles, advertising materials and any other text that can be translated by qualified professionals.

Proofreading

We proofread translations to ensure the compatibility of the terminology, verify grammatical and editorial aspects and ensure adaptation of the material to the relevant linguistic characteristics of the country for which the written material is destined.

Prices

The price of a translation is calculated per standard page. Each standard page is equal to 1,000 characters without spaces, or approximately 180 words, and the character count is done after the text has been translated.

For simple or technical translations, prices will depend on the length and complexity of the text and the deadline. There is no official regulation, but our practice and prices are guided by SINTRA (National Translators Union).

For sworn translations, there is a price table with the values defined by the Board of Trade of each Brazilian state that are included in the “Price Table for Public Translators and Interpreters”. For the State of São Paulo, the price per standard page (in Portuguese – lauda) can be found on the JUCESP.
